At the Edge of the Cliff
She was sitting at the edge of a steep rugged rock and was looking down at the dark sea waves hitting the coast several meters under the rock. The heaven was dark but still - as if it was predicting a coming storm. Her snow-white dress contrasted her black hair slightly flying about in the wind. She was holding a white flower wreath in her hands. She was slowly plucking the leaves and throwing it down into the dark waves. Her eyes were looking absently somewhere into far.
She herself couldn´t explain what she felt. Was it emptiness? Was it despair? Was it fear? Maybe it was all together. She felt like a bird that was created to fly but whose wings were cut off. It seemed as if she was not able to live a life that she was predestined to live. As if she was not actually living but only surviving. Her heart was full of dreams, big dreams and somewhere in the deep of her soul she hoped to fulfill them but she didn´t know how to do it.
First rain drops were slowly beginning to fall down from heaven. They were falling at her pale face and mixed with her tears. The girl got up. She was ready although little bit wavering.
She stood at the very edge of the crag and looked down at the wildly rushing sea waves hitting the stony walls. It began to rain heavily and the wind was tearing the girl´s dress and ruffling her hair. She dropped her flower wreath and if fell down into the cold water.
She got ready to jump. She closed her eyes and stepped forward.
„You don´t have to do that“, she heard a voice behind her.
She shook, opened her eyes and slowly turned backwards. There was a man standing behind her, the most uncommon man she had ever seen. He wore a long white garment that remained clean and dry even in the rain as if the weather had no influence on it. His face expression showed sincere compassion. His eyes spoke with affectionate love. The girl immediately recognized him without any introduction. She knew him very well … or was the knowledge of him not so deep? Actually she didn´t expect him to come there. While standing there and looking into his eyes she felt something falling down off her. The feelings of self-pity, rebellion and complaints were leaving her. He didn´t need to say any word. The girl began to cry at a moment and fell into his arms. He hugged her and let her cry.
„Why have you always been running from me?“, he asked.
„I have been running?“, she wondered. „It was you who left me. Where have you been all the time?“
He looked at her sadly but without reproach. „All the time I have been standing at your side waiting for you to call me.“
She knew it was true. Actually she had known it even before she asked him.
„And now, will you stay with me always?“ she asked heartily.
„I will never leave you. And will you not leave me?“
She hugged him once more. „I do not ever want to leave you“, she whispered.
„So do you finally want to see what I have prepared for you?“
She looked at him with surprise but then she smiled. „Yes, I do. Show me, please.“
He took her hand and they went together back to the rock. As they were getting nearer and nearer to the very edge, he stepped into the emptiness and she followed him. They didn´t fall but went on. And finally she realized she was doing the very thing she was created for. She got her wings back.
